1. INTRODUCTION

The Dean of the College of Engineering has allocated a portion of the earnings from the Alcoa Professorship to be used for named professorships in the Departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) and Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE). The balance of the spending allocation in the endowment will be used for annual research awards to faculty in the College of Engineering. This rule describes the procedure to award the Alcoa Professorship in CBE and the Alcoa Professorship in ECE and is in agreement with the terms of the endowment.

2. CRITERIA

Nominees must be full time tenured associate professors or professors who have distinguished themselves in teaching, research, or extension.

3. PROCEDURE

3.1. The Department Head of CBE or ECE, as appropriate, will appoint a selection committee consisting of the Associate Dean of Research, themselves, and one professor of distinction from each department chosen by the department head in consultation with the Dean of Engineering.

3.2. The Alcoa Professor is a time-limited appointment of three years. Recipients may be reappointed for an unlimited number of consecutive three-year terms by approval of the Dean and a positive vote by a majority of the selection committee.

3.3. The committee will recommend a recipient to the Dean based on the applicable criteria set forth in NCSU REG05.20.17 – Professorships of Distinction. Recommendation of the nominee is decided by majority vote of the committee.

3.4 Upon the Dean’s approval, the Head will notify the faculty member of the award.

3.5. The income from this endowment may be used for partial salary support and/or research funding for the named professor. The allocation of salary and research support will be determined by the department head in consultation with the named professor.

3.6. The Dean will inform the Chancellor and Provost of the award.
