1. INTRODUCTION

R. A. and Mildred Lancaster established the Alton and Mildred Lancaster Professorship in the College of Engineering at NC State University. This rule describes the procedure for nominating and awarding this professorship and is in agreement with the terms of the endowment. The professorship is a legacy professorship according to the NCSU REG05.20.17 – Professorships of Distinction. When awarded after May 17, 2011 no additional modifiers may be added to the title.

2.  PROCEDURE

2.1 When there is an opportunity for an appointment to the Lancaster professorship, the Dean will appoint an ad hoc selection committee consisting of at least three tenured NC State faculty members who are full professors.

2.2 Candidate(s) will be forwarded to the committee for consideration either by the Dean or, if requested by the Dean, by NC State faculty colleagues.

2.3 The committee will recommend an outstanding current or potential tenured faculty member recipient to the Dean based on merit.  Recommendation of candidates is decided by majority of the committee.

2.4 The income from this endowment may be used for a salary supplement and/or discretionary support.  The amounts allocated to salary and discretionary support will be determined by the selected incumbent and confirmed by the Dean.

2.5 Successful candidates will retain the Lancaster professorship title for a fixed term that is not to exceed five years and that may be renewable.

2.6 If the incumbent separates from employment, the funds will be retained for the use of the new named professor as defined in section 2.4.

2.7 The Dean will inform the Chancellor and Provost of the award.
