1. INTRODUCTION

1.1  The Burroughs Wellcome Fund Professorship in Veterinary Pharmacology, established by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, was created to promote the field and career of veterinary pharmacology.  This rule describes the procedure to award this professorship and is in agreement with the terms of the endowment.  The award consists of a salary supplement paid from the earnings of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Professorship Endowment.

2. PROCEDURE

2.1  The Dean will appoint a selection committee consisting of five tenured NC State faculty members from the College of Veterinary Medicine.  If veterinary pharmacologists serve as faculty members within multiple departments in the college, all such departments should be represented on the selection committee.  Preference will be given to the appointment of full professors to the selection committee.

2.2  The recipient of the award is to be a veterinary pharmacologist.  If ever the field of veterinary pharmacology becomes overcrowded so as not to provide a meaningful career for aspiring veterinarians, this professorship may be used in another area with career potential until there is a need again in the field of veterinary pharmacology.  The selection committee will make a recommendation of an alternate field to the dean, who will have final approval.

2.3  The committee will recommend a recipient to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.  The term of the professorship shall also be recommended by the committee to the Dean.  The Dean will have final approval of both the recipient and the term.  If the term exceeds five (5) years, a five-year review will be conducted.  Incumbents may be reappointed.  If the incumbent retires, resigns or otherwise ends or significantly decreases their activities in veterinary pharmacology, this professorship will be relinquished.

2.4  Recipients will be recognized as Burroughs Wellcome Professors in Veterinary Pharmacology (unless an alternate field is selected).

2.5  The Dean will inform the Chancellor and Provost of the award.
