1. INTRODUCTION

The Furniture Foundation, Inc. established the James T. Ryan Professorship in the Department of Industrial Engineering to advance the prosperity and efficiency of manufacturing industries, including but not limited to, furniture. This rule describes the procedure to award this professorship and is in agreement with the terms of the endowment.

2. PROCEDURE

2.1. The Department Head will appoint a selection committee consisting of at least three tenured NC State faculty members who are full professors with the majority being Professors of Distinction.

2.2. Full professors with a full time appointment working in some area of manufacturing in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering may be considered for this named professorship.

2.3. The committee will recommend a recipient to the Dean based on the applicable criteria set forth in this rule per the endowment agreement and NC State policies and regulations. Recommendation of the nominee is decided by majority vote of the committee.

2.3.1 Upon recommendation by the committee and decision by the Dean, the awarding of this professorship may be made for a specific term.

2.3.2 Upon recommendation by the committee and decision by the Dean, the awarding of this professorship may stipulate a review of the incumbent. The review period should be specified and will be conducted per university policy.

2.4. The income from this endowment may be used to supplement research in programs closely oriented to the manufacturing industry, the salary of the professorship recipient, and extension activities directly related to the manufacturing program, promotional projects that are designed to create interest and registration in the manufacturing curriculum, and other projects specifically related to the manufacturing program. The allocation of salary and research support will be determined by the department head in consultation with the named professor.

2.5. When a vacancy exists, the income may be used by the department head for other expenditures in support of programs relating to the manufacturing industry.

2.6. The Dean will inform the Chancellor and Provost of the award.
