1. INTRODUCTION

The Furniture Foundation, Inc. established the James T. Ryan Professorship in the Department of Industrial Engineering to advance the prosperity and efficiency of the furniture industry through resident instruction, research, and extension in subject matter directly related to furniture manufacturing and management. This rule describes the procedure to award this professorship and is in agreement with the terms of the endowment.

2. PROCEDURE

2.1. The Department Head will appoint a selection committee consisting of at least three tenured NC State faculty members who are full professors with the majority being Professors of Distinction.

2.2. Full professors with a full time appointment working in some area of the furniture industry in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering may be considered for this named professorship.

2.3. The committee will recommend a recipient to the Dean based on the applicable criteria set forth in NCSU REG05.20.17 – Professorships of Distinction. Recommendation of the nominee is decided by majority vote of the committee.

2.4. The income from this endowment may be used to supplement research in programs closely oriented to the furniture industry, the salary of the professorship recipient, and extension activities directly related to the furniture manufacturing and management program, promotional projects that are designed to create interest and registration in the furniture curriculum, and other projects specifically related to the furniture manufacturing and management program. The allocation of salary and research support will be determined by the department head in consultation with the named professor.

2.5. When a vacancy exists, the income may be used by the department head, in consultation with the Director of the Furniture Program, for other expenditures in support of programs relating to the furniture industry.

2.6. The Dean will inform the Chancellor and Provost of the award.
