1.  INTRODUCTION

1.1  The Samuel P. Langley named term professorship for the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department is supported in part by the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA).  The NIA is a consortium of six founding universities, each with a S. P. Langley professor, where the Langley professor spends a substantial amount of time at the NIA and Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.  This rule describes the procedure to award this named term professorship and is in agreement with the terms of the Langley professor program.

2.  PROCEDURE

2.1  The Dean will appoint a selection committee consisting of five tenured NC State faculty members with the majority being Professors of Distinction.

2.2  The committee will recommend a recipient to the Dean based on University guidelines (REG05.20.17) for Professors of Distinction.

2.3  There is no income associated with this named term professorship; however, a research contract from the NIA to NC State supports the research activities of the Langley professor.

2.4  If the incumbent retires, resigns or takes different responsibilities in the department, college or university, this professorship and NIA research contract associated with this professorship will be relinquished.

2.5  If the research contract is no longer available from the NIA, the appointment to the professorship will be relinquished.

2.6  The Dean will inform the Chancellor and Provost of the award.
