1. Introduction

Across North Carolina, and in tobacco producing regions throughout the nation and around the world, Dr. William K. “Bill” Collins is known as a brilliant innovator, skillful educator, and effective leader, and beloved as a generous mentor and faithful friend. For more than 40 years, tobacco producers, their county extension agents, tobacco purchasing and manufacturing companies, and NC State University have benefited from his leadership.  Ann T. Collins is also well-known and well-loved by the tobacco and university communities. Bill and Ann Collins have both provided leadership and support to NC State University and the greater community as quiet, yet generous philanthropists. In keeping with a lifelong commitment to innovation, education and service on behalf of the tobacco industry William K. and Ann T. Collins (the “Donors”) of Raleigh, NC wish to establish a named term professorship.

2. Criteria

The professorship will time limited for a period of up to five years with $20,000 per year awarded as salary.  It will be awarded to a tenured full professor in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences pursuing tobacco agronomy extension activities, as determined to best meet the needs of the College by the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

3. Procedure

3.1 The Dean will announce when a vacancy occurs and nominations are being accepted.   Candidates will submit a CV and Statement of Faculty Responsibility.  Self nominations are permitted.

3.2 The Dean, Director of NC Cooperative Extension, Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and the Director of Academic Programs of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Department Head of Crop and Soil Sciences will serve as the selection committee. They may consult with others who work in the area of tobacco if they deem appropriate.

3.3 If the incumbent retires, resigns or takes different responsibilities in the department, college or university, the professorship and funds associated with the professorship will be relinquished.  This professorship can be renewed for a specified time period if deemed appropriate.

3.4 The Dean will inform the Chancellor and Provost of the award.
