1.  INTRODUCTION        

This rule describes the standards and procedures of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering for post tenure review of faculty.  It supplements NC State University’s Academic Tenure Policy and Regulation on Post Tenure Review (PTR) of Faculty.  To the extent of any inconsistency, the Academic Tenure Policy and Post Tenure Review Regulation control.  The Department Head is responsible for assuring that the procedures as set forth inNCSU REG05.20.04 – Post Tenure Review of Faculty and this Rule are followed.

  1.  POST TENURE REVIEW COMMITTEE (PTRC)

2.1 Selection

The tenured departmental faculty shall elect a three-person PTR Committee (PTRC) comprised of members of the tenured full professors. Terms of service of the PTRC shall be three years. The Department Head shall initiate the PTRC election each fall semester as vacancies arise and will appoint a chair of the committee from those members serving the longest term.  If a PTRC member leaves the committee prior to end of term, the faculty will elect a replacement to complete the term. If a PTRC member leaves the committee from those members serving the longest term. Faculty who will be reviewed during the term are not eligible to serve on the PTRC.

2.2 Meeting Schedule

The PTRC Chair will meet with the Department Head early in the spring semester to learn who will be reviewed during that year and to review the schedule. The review, as set forth in section 5 of University NCSU REG05.20.04 – Post Tenure Review of Faculty, as well as this RULE, will be held in the spring semester (in the April/May timeframe) after the Department has assembled the required materials. The PTRC Chair will schedule all meetings, coordinate with the Department Head, and prepare and transmit reports from the committee to the Department Head.

  1. ADDITIONAL PROCEDURES REQUIRED BY DEPARTMENT

Faculty under review will be informed of the decisions through meetings with the Department Head who will share with the faculty member the report from the PTRC chair, as well as the evaluation by the Department Head.

  1. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

5.1 Standards for Associate Professor

Associate Professors are expected to contribute appropriately, competently, and commensurate with her/his rank to the department’s mission of teaching, research and service and are evaluated on evidence of meeting the standards of teaching, research and service set forth in their Statement of Faculty Responsibilities (SFR).

5.2 Standards for Professor

Professors are expected to contribute appropriately, competently, and commensurate with her/his rank to the department’s mission of teaching, research and service and are evaluated on evidence of meeting the standards of teaching, research and service set forth in their Statement of Faculty Responsibilities (SFR).

5.3 Procedure

The PTR Committee will provide a written assessment of the faculty member’s performance with respect to the standards stated in the faculty member’s SFR. The assessment will recommend whether the faculty member’s overall performance “does not meet”, “meets”, or “exceeds” expectations as stated in the SFR. This determination will be based on a simple majority vote of the PTRC. The recommendation and use of “exceeds” expectations will be reserved for faculty who exhibit exemplary quality of research, teaching and/or service beyond the expectations defined in his or her SFR.
