1. INTRODUCTION

This rule describes standards and procedures of the Department of Parks Recreation and Tourism Management for post tenure review of faculty.  It supplements NC State University’s Academic Tenure Policy and Regulation on Post Tenure Review of Faculty.  To the extent of any inconsistency, the Academic Tenure Policy and Post Tenure Review Regulation control. The Department Head is responsible for assuring that the procedures as set forth in NCSU REG05.20.04 – Post Tenure Review of Faculty and this Rule are followed.

2. POST TENURE REVIEW COMMITTEE (PTRC)

2.1.1 The PTRC shall consist of three tenured faculty members appointed by the Department Head of Parks Recreation and Tourism Management. PTRC members will serve staggered three-year terms with one new member being appointed each year.  All tenured faculty in the department are eligible to serve on the PTRC, unless they will be reviewed during the term.  If a member of the PTRC leaves the committee prior to the end of his or her term, the Department Head in consultation with the PTRC Chair will appoint a new member.

2.1.2 In any given academic year, the member of the PTRC who is serving in their last year will chair the committee.  The PTRC Chair should become familiar with the applicable policies and regulations and this rule.

2.2 Meeting Schedule

The PTRC Chair will meet with the Department Head early in the fall semester to determine who will be reviewed during that year and to set the schedule for the review.  The main review will be held in the spring after the Department has assembled the required materials from each faculty member to be reviewed (see Section 3).

The PTRC Chair will schedule all meetings, coordinate with the Department Head, and prepare and transmit reports from the committee to the Head and to the faculty members reviewed.

3. DOCUMENTATION PROVIDED TO THE PTRC

4. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

The PTRC will refer to Section 3: General Standards of NCSU RUL05.67.601 – Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management – Departmental Criteria for Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure when considering performance standards for post tenure review evaluation.  Materials will be reviewed to determine if a faculty is performing the responsibilities of his/her rank as described below.

4.1 Standards for Associate Professor

4.1.1 Associate Professors are to be evaluated to determine if they meet expectations for responsibilities set forth in their Statement of Faculty Responsibilities at the Associate Professor standard as articulated  in the Department’s Rule on Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure Standards and Procedures. They must present evidence that they are maintaining the standards for promotion to associate professor as set forth in the Academic Tenure Policy and college and departmental reappointment, promotion and tenure rules.

4.1.2 Criteria for Evaluating Performance Standards for Associate Professor

The criteria listed below apply to the teaching, research, extension/outreach, and service activities of tenured faculty. A faculty member will be reviewed on the criteria that relate to his/her job responsibilities and performance as described in his/her Statement of Faculty Responsibilities. Typically, these criteria will include a combination of two of the activities listed below (teaching and research, teaching and outreach, research and outreach, etc.).

  1. Faculty will teach at an acceptable standard as measured by peer evaluation, which includes classroom visits and review of course syllabi and associated course materials.  In addition, faculty will be active in mentoring students.
  2. Faculty will conduct an active research program resulting in scholarly productivity and contributions.  Specifically, these research contributions should focus on discovery and/or the application of knowledge to the faculty member’s field or discipline or interdisciplinary work.
  3. Faculty will have an active extension/outreach effort which demonstrates the application of the faculty member’s expertise to a professional field and communities. These efforts should contribute to the enhancement of a relevant academic field or community well-being.
