1. INTRODUCTION

This rule establishes college information for the comprehensive, periodic, cumulative review of the performance of all the college’s tenured faculty. This rule is consistent with the requirements of NC State’s REG 05.20.04 Post Tenure Review of Faculty, UNC Policy 400.3.3 – Performance Review of Tenured Faculty and UNC Policy 400.3.3.1[G] – Guidelines on Performance Review of Tenured Faculty.

2. STANDARDS FOR MEETING EXPECTATIONS

2.1 Standards for Associate Professor

Associate Professors are to be evaluated to determine if they are performing the realms of responsibility set forth in their Statement of Faculty Responsibilities at the Associate Professor standard as set forth in the College’s Rule defined in the reappointment, promotion and tenure process, NCSU RUL 05.67.603 – College of Natural Resources Promotion and Tenure Standards and Procedures. They must present evidence that they are maintaining the standards for the rank of associate professor as set forth in the Academic Tenure Policy and departmental and college reappointment, promotion and tenure rules.

2.2 Standards for Professor

Professors are to be evaluated to determine if they are performing the realms of responsibility set forth in their Statement of Faculty Responsibilities at the Professor standard as set forth in the College’s Rule defined in the reappointment, promotion and tenure process, NCSU RUL 05.67.603 – College of Natural Resources Promotion and Tenure Standards and Procedures. They must present evidence that they are maintaining the standards for the rank of professor as set forth in the Academic Tenure Policy and departmental and college reappointment, promotion and tenure rules.

3. STANDARDS FOR EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

3.1 Standards for Exceeds Expectations

A faculty member who “exceeds expectations” would be one who is exemplary in the realms of responsibility as defined in the faculty member’s SFR. The faculty member under review consistently exceeds the defined expectations of both the department and college, including but not limited to advancing the department and college through new processes and practices, receiving extraordinary teaching evaluations, extraordinary quantity or quality of scholarly works and funding, receipt of prestigious awards recognizing distinguished achievement in one or more realms of faculty responsibility or their discipline, being named a fellow in a relevant society, and gaining membership to one of the national academies. The faculty member would exhibit exceptional leadership and mentorship skills consistent with the vision and mission of the department and college.

4. COLLEGE POST TENURE REVIEW COMMITTEE

Section 6.3 of REG 05.20.04 states that if the Dean’s initial determination of the faculty member’s performance differs from that of the Department Post Tenure Review Committee and/or the Department Head, then a College Post Tenure Review Committee is to be involved.

The Dean, in consultation with the department heads in each department, will appoint a College Post Tenure Review Committee each year, as needed, if the Dean’s initial determination of the faculty member’s performance differs from that of the Department Post Tenure Review Committee and/or the Department Head. Each Department Head shall appoint one faculty member from their respective department. The Dean shall appoint one faculty member from each department for a total of six tenured faculty members on the College Post Tenure Review Committee. Faculty members serving on the College Post Tenure Review Committee shall not be faculty members currently serving on the Department Post Tenure Review Committee. The chair of the committee shall be elected by the committee at their first meeting. If a member of the college committee is not able to fulfill his/her duties on the committee, a replacement will be appointed. The term of each member of this committee will be for one year.

 5. ADDITIONAL PROCEDURES FOR THE COLLEGE OF NATURAL RESOURCES

5.1 Logistics of the Process

5.1.1. The Department Head will send to the Dean the names of the PTR departmental committees by October 1.

5.1.2. The Department Head will provide to the Dean, by October 1, a list of faculty members identified to be reviewed in the PTR process during the current academic year.

5.1.3. The Department Head will provide the Dean, by October 1, the dates each faculty member under review was advised of the procedure for the review.

5.1.4. In addition to the responsibilities outlined elsewhere in this college rule and department rules, the Department Head will notify the Dean after the review is completed and a final decision rendered, of the date the revised SFR is completed.

5.2 Training

UNC General Administration has provided an online training resource for all faculty and administrators involved in Post-Tenure Review. The Dean will obtain attestations from each department head that all personnel in their department who are involved in the Post Tenure Review process have completed the online training. The Dean will then report to the Provost that the college has complied with the mandatory training requirement by the deadline established by the Provost’s office.
